Dr. Mai Nguyen, MD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Minnesota who exemplifies a truly patient-centered approach to care and research. Driven by the real-world questions and challenges she encounters in clinical practice, Dr. Nguyen has built a research portfolio that prioritizes the needs and perspectives of patients with musculoskeletal injuries.
Early in her career, she turned to research as a practical tool to enhance patient care, using evidence-based insights to guide clinical decision-making and strengthen patient consultations. What began as a means of support quickly evolved into a passion for advancing orthopedic knowledge on a broader scale. Dr. Nguyen is particularly motivated by the far-reaching impact of her work—recognizing that meaningful research can influence not just individual patients, but thousands more through shared knowledge and improved standards of care.
In addition to her clinical and research contributions, Dr. Nguyen serves as the Resident Research Advisory Panel Director, where she plays a key role in shaping research education for orthopedic residents. She is a strong advocate for research literacy as a cornerstone of clinical excellence, helping trainees bridge the gap between theory and practice.
Central to Dr. Nguyen’s work is her commitment to involving patients directly in the research process. By engaging patients as collaborators, she ensures that studies address the questions that matter most to those receiving care. This inclusive approach has led to more accessible communication, increased patient participation in clinical trials, and ultimately, more impactful outcomes.
Through her leadership, innovation, and dedication to patient-centered research, Dr. Nguyen is helping to redefine the future of orthopedic care.
